When people start exploring where to live in the Treasure Valley, two cities that frequently come up in conversation are Kuna and Star.

But while Kuna and Star are often grouped together as “fast-growing cities,” the way growth is happening in each place is actually quite different.

Where Kuna and Star Sit in the Valley

Kuna sits south of Meridian, with development gradually expanding outward from the Boise–Meridian area.
Star sits northwest of Boise, positioned between Eagle and the agricultural lands that extend toward Middleton.
Because of this, each city expands in a different direction relative to the valley’s major employment centers.

The Growth Pattern in Kuna
Kuna’s growth is closely tied to the expansion of Meridian and south Boise. Over time, development has gradually extended farther south as land becomes available for new communities.
A few characteristics of Kuna’s growth pattern:
1. Expansion from the Meridian edge
Much of Kuna’s recent development has occurred along the Meridian–Kuna corridor, where new subdivisions and infrastructure have extended the suburban footprint.
2. Larger areas available for new neighborhoods
Compared to more built-out cities, Kuna still has areas where larger master-planned communities can be built.
3. A small-town core surrounded by newer development
Downtown Kuna remains compact, with many newer neighborhoods spreading outward around the historic center.
Because of these factors, Kuna often attracts people looking for:
- Newer neighborhoods
- A quieter pace compared to Boise or Meridian
- More space between major commercial corridors
The Growth Pattern in Star
Star’s growth is influenced heavily by its proximity to Eagle and the Boise foothills. Over the past several years, development has expanded westward from Eagle into Star, bringing new neighborhoods while maintaining the town’s small-community feel.
Key characteristics of Star’s growth:
1. Expansion from Eagle toward the west
Many new neighborhoods have emerged along the Eagle Road corridor and surrounding areas.
2. Limited expansion directions
Because of surrounding farmland and foothill geography, growth often occurs in specific corridors rather than spreading evenly in all directions.
3. A strong small-town identity
Despite new development, Star still centers around a compact downtown and community events that reflect its small-town roots.
For many buyers, Star appeals because it offers:
- Proximity to Eagle and northwest Boise
- Foothill views and access to outdoor areas
- A quieter residential environment with newer communities
Comparing How Growth Feels
Although both cities are expanding, the experience of that growth can feel different depending on where you are in the valley.
In Kuna, growth often feels like a natural extension of the Meridian and south Boise area. New neighborhoods continue to appear along the Meridian–Kuna corridor, gradually pushing the suburban edge farther south.
In Star, growth tends to feel more connected to Eagle and the northwest side of the valley. New communities often appear along the Eagle Road corridor and surrounding areas as development moves westward.
Because of this, the two cities can feel different in terms of daily rhythms, commuting patterns, and how quickly new neighborhoods appear.
Neither pattern is better or worse — they simply reflect different ways a growing region expands over time.
Why Growth Matters When Choosing a City
Growth affects more than just new houses. It can influence things like:
- commute routes
- school construction
- new parks and commercial areas
- traffic patterns over time
- how quickly neighborhoods fill in
For some people, living in a growing area feels exciting and full of opportunity. For others, a more established area may feel more predictable.
Understanding how growth is happening helps set expectations for what living there may look like over the next several years.
